No Job Interviews 5 Things You Might Be Doing Wrong

No Job Interviews 5 Things You Might Be Doing WrongNo Job Interviews 5 Things You Might Be Doing WrongWhat am I doing wrong? Another week has passed, and still no job interviews.Weve all been there. Submitting applications on a daily basis and hopelessly waiting for a response. You might feel like theres no light at the end of this job-hunting tunnel. But perhaps, like many others, youve just been making a couple of simple mistakes all along.Keep reading and find out how you can send your resume to top of the proverbial pile of resumes.1. Your application ends up in the binWhen applying for a position in a large company, youll be competing with hundereds of applicants. Ultimately, most will be offered no job interviews. Many companies useapplicant tracking systems (ATS) to make the hiring process more efficient. Each candidate fills out an ansprechbar application, which an ATS evaluates based on keywords and phrases. In the end, only the very best resumes get to the hiring manager. The question is, how to get your application past the robots, straight into the hands of your hiring manager?Keep it simpleATS will reject illegible formatting. Avoid using illegible fonts and dont overload your CV with logos, pictures, and unnecessary sections.Avoid irrelevant keywordsMake every word on the resume count. ATS want to see if your application matches the job description. For example, instead of listing ambiguous skills, name the particular software you have experience with.Skip the career objectiveThe automatized ATS dont have much understanding for motivational paragraphs filled with fluff. Instead, use this section to bullet point your achievements, skills, and experiences. No spelling or grammar mistakes allowedFact Robots show no mercy. If an ATS detects too many inconsitencies, it will dismiss your application immediately.Regardless of whethert the company uses automatized selection process or not, writing an ATS-friendly resume is good practice for any kind of job. I f a robot can read your CV, so can a hiring manager.2. Your resume doesnt sell you wellOften the problem isnt your lack of experience, but how youre able to sell yourself. Here are a few tips to make you look more attractive on a resumeMake your resume visually appealing and easy to read.Be specific about your skills, but avoid sounding like a superhero.Describe all achievements and experience in detail, supporting them with numbers and figures.Be confident about your skills, but humble as a person. If youre looking for more tips on how to write an attractive resume, check out our ebook. You underestimate the power of the deckblatt letterDid you suddenly decide to leave your corporate job and travel the world? This is your chance to turn your weaknesses into greatest strengths.Follow ourcomplete guide to writing a powerful cover letterand submit a cover letter recruiters will love.4. Your application isnt tailored to the jobIts tempting to use a single resume for multiple job applications. Equally, each company is looking for different qualities in their applicants.A great place to start is building your resume with the job description in mind. What are the requirements ? What tasks would you be doing? Always tailor your resume to the particular job youre applying to.For more tips check out this detailed guide on how to tailor your resume to a job offer.5. Your ansprechbar presence is too weakOften, before you get invited for a job interview, HR will check your social media profiles. An outdated LinkedIn profile may well be the reason youre getting no job interviews. But having an all-star profile will boost the chances of your application making it through the selection process.Remember though, that LinkedIn isnt an online version of your resumebut a social network. Use it to expand your professional network.Check out this guide to make yourself noticed on LinkedIn.When it comes to social media, itd be foolish to think you can separate your professional and personal life.As much as 46% of applications get rejected in by employers due toinappropriate photos and information on their profile. Why Thank-You Notes for Job Interviews Never Go Out of Style

Why Thank-You Notes for Job Interviews Never Go Out of StyleWhy Thank-You Notes for Job Interviews Never Go Out of StyleWhy Thank-You Cards Never Go Out of StyleSometimes its the little things that make a big difference, especially in your job search.Youd be surprised at how many candidates forget common courtesies throughout the interview process, even when they know that making a great first impression is crucial. Remember, just as you are interviewing the company to make sure they are a good fit culturally for you, they are also hiring YOU, the person not just the skills on your resume. Most companies would prefer a professional and polite candidate over a rude or unprofessional one.Sadly, common courtesy, like common sense, is not all that common. The good news for you is that it is possible to shine like a diamond in a coal mine by practicing niceties and remembering your manners during the interview process. Now, its possible you dont need this advice, as you are probably a co urteous person the majority of the time, but interviews can be a bit nerve-wracking. Its good to assume you are on the second you exit your car the day of the interview. One company I worked with had the owners wife work the reception desk and believe me, they took notenzeichen of how candidates treated herIn addition to being genuinely pleasant to all you encounter, job interview thank-you notes are a much neglected courtesy. A brief card or email to each person who interviewed you is appropriate, and should be sent the day after the interview. Make sure you know the correct spelling of the name, and if you send the note to more than one person, individualize each one. The purpose of the interview thank-you card is simply to thank the interviewer for their time, and to state your interest in the position. Of those two items, the thanking is the most important. A full-court press at this stage will dilute the effectiveness of the thank you.Emailed thank-you notes are also perfectly acceptable, but handwritten ones on a simple, elegant note card are rare enough to really make you stand fremd from the crowd. This doesnt go without saying, but if you do opt for a handwritten thank you, make sure your writing is legible. Its all about making a positive impression and showing yourself as the best investment. Being social on social media means that youre on it. Every. Single. Day. In fact, personal branding is something that you should incorporate into your daily job search. But dont worry a bout it taking up too much time you can be selective about what you post, and use publishing platforms, such as Hootsuite, to monitor multiple media channels.Youre only using one social media channel.Facebook. Twitter. Pinterest. Instagram. Snapchat. Reddit. Google+. While there are an amazing amount of social media channels out there, perspektives are that you favor one or two of them, choosing to post to those- and ignoring all others. Thing is, by using only a select few, you might be missing out on promoting your personal brand to your advantage. So do a test Try investing some time in other social media channels that you tend to neglect, and see what happens. You might notice a spike in likes, more followers, or peoplesharing your content. See which ones bring you the most bang for your job-seeking buck, and spend some more time on those.Youre not being social enough. You post interesting factoids on your social media channels, and share the latest in your journey toward findin g a flexible job. But if youre only posting information and not encouraging your audience to connect with you, youre missing the point of social media. People (particularly hiring managers and potential bosses) want to know who you are, and want to establish a connection with you. So if you do post something new on social media, get the conversation going Ask users what they think, how they would improve upon what you posted, if theyve had similar experiences, and so on. Remember, theres a reason why its called social media. With so many things to think about during your job search, theres a chance that your personal brand might slip a little. But take the time to invest some energy into your personal branding. Your job search will thank you.Readers, do you focus on your personal brand while job searching? Hillary Clinton reportedly kept campaign aide Burns Strider, accused of sexual harassment, from being fired

Hillary Clinton reportedly kept campaign aide Burns Strider, accused of sexual harassment, from being firedHillary Clinton reportedly kept campaign aide Burns Strider, accused of sexual harassment, from being firedHillary Clinton chose to keep a senior adviser to herbei 2008 U.S. presidential campaign,Burns Strider, after she learned he had been accused of repeated sexual harassment, according to a new bombshell report published Friday by The New York Times.During the 2008 campaign, a 30-year-old female subordinate accused Clintons faith advisor, Burns Strider, of harassing her. According to the Times, the unnamed woman, who is under a nondisclosure agreement from discussing internal dynamics within the campaign, told a campaign official that Strider had rubbed her shoulders inappropriately, kissed her on the forehead and sent her a string of suggestive emails. After Clinton welches informed of the situation, Clinton went against the recommendation of her campaign manager Patti Solis Doyle and chose not to fire Strider. The unnamed employee was moved to a new role within the campaign, while Strider got his pay docked and underwent counseling. To ensure a safe working environment, the campaign had a process to address complaints of misconduct or harassment, a Clinton legal spokesperson said in a statement to the Times. When matters arose, they were reviewed in accordance with these policies, and appropriate action was taken. This complaint was no exception. After his work on the Clinton campaign, Strider was later hired by David Brocks organization, Correct the Record, where he worked until he was allegedly fired for workplace harassment, according to the Times.

Customized Manufacturing

Customized Manufacturing Customized Manufacturing Dell is offered up again and again as the prime example of customized manufacturing done right and done successfully. Shortly after its founding in 1984, Dell began a configure-to-order approach to manufacturing. Customers choose from multiple options for their own computers on the Dell Web site and then the computer is manufactured. Manufacturersparticularly electronics manufacturershave been taking notice. Many of them are investigating how the configure-to-order model could be put to use at their own companies and some have implemented the methodalong with the necessary software to get the job donewith great success. Their approaches follow the Dell model: same basic parts, many configurations; and the capability to assemble the product to order and get the product out the door quickly. Hypertherm recently redesigned its plasma metal cutting equipment to reduce part count by 27 percent while doubling the number of inputs available. Customers can now choose from ten product configurations. Count Down the Parts Hypertherm Inc. of Hanover, N.H., maker of plasma metal cutting equipment, is one such company. About two years ago, company executives sought a way to offer customers a broader Edge Pro product line with more options than in the former product line. We wanted to take a subset of very robust parts and easily assemble them into different configurations, said John Sobr, head designer on the project. We reuse whats good by creating many flavors of the product, but all the parts are designed to play nicely together. While Hypertherm customers dont have as many options to choose from as Dell customers, they are able to pick among many more features than in the past, andin tandem with the companys lean manufacturing processthe product is assembled shortly after the request. Modularity is the word that Mike Shipulski, engineering manager at Hypertherm, uses to describe his companys new manufacturing model. Modularity builds on a series of loosely coupled subassemblies that can be configured in various ways to broaden the product line, offer a more customized product, and slash manufacturing costs. Spend Half the Time The Edge Pro product can now be assembled in half the time using 27 percent fewer parts, according to Sobr. We made the system more modular, he said. We had to make the parts multitask. Its like, if you made a transmission that could work for a car, a truck, and a dump truck. Its the same component, but has to be more versatile so you have to add complexity. Engineers analyzed existing products and assembly techniques. This included counting parts and documenting assembly stepsa seemingly tedious process, yet one that yielded a chart to serve as a baseline to measure the success of the new design and seek new opportunities for improvement. They coupled that chart with feedback from customer surveys from CNC installers, customers, and machine operators, who spoke about their own hopes for a future product line. Engineers paid attention to that feedback to stay on the right track with their market. They also obtained input from operators on the assembly floor, asking them how to speed the assembly process while keeping it straightforward and easy to execute. Operators suggested simpler harnessing systems, easier access to components within the CNC equipment, and less manipulating products on the line. Ultimately the redesign benefits ripple beyond the assembly line. In fact, the benefits are felt throughout the facility from the UPS drivers who bring fewer boxes of parts into our facility daily, and our procurement people who have less to worry about now with the lower variety and quantity of parts to purchase, Shipulski said. But the greatest benefit is selection. Customers can now choose among products suited to their needs and their budgets. [Adapted from Custom Model by Jean Thilmany, Associate Editor, Mechanical Engineering, April 2010.] Ultimately the redesign benefits ripple beyond the assembly line.

How to Do a Great Job Even When You Dont Like Your Job

How to Do a Great Job Even When You Dont Like Your Job How to Do a Great Job Even When You Dont Like Your Job If you don’t like your current job, you probably want to find a better job. But in order to get a better job, you need to do excellent work at your current job. (So you can build a solid reputation, get stellar references, and attract new career opportunities.) This can often feel like a catch-22- because it’s not easy to do excellent work when you’re feeling unhappy! So today, I’ll share three steps to help you reframe the way you think about your current job, so that you can give it your very best, and then- when it’s time- move onto something better. 1. Get Empowered Instead of saying “My boss is the worst!” or “I’m trapped here!” change the script in your mind to one of accountability and empowerment. Say: “I chose this job. And next? I can choose something better.” By revising your mental script in this way, you’re affirming that you’re not a victim- you’re the one in charge of your choices. You’ve got options. You can make new choices. You’re not at the mercy of anyone else. Your life is your own. As actress Téa Leoni reminds us in her role on the hit show Madam Secretary: “I’ve never met a situation where I don’t have a choice.” 2. Be Appreciative You can still appreciate the fact that you have a job- even if it’s not your dream job. Just like you can appreciate the fact that modern medicine can heal your broken arm with a cast, even if you would prefer not to have a broken arm in the first place! Don’t lose sight of all the privileges that your current job provides. A good income? Benefits? Paid vacation time? Access to interesting colleagues? Free training? Hot coffee? We often forget that employment is a privilege, not a right. Use that to cultivate a feeling of gratitude for your current position, even while you’re searching for something better. 3. Respect Yourself You’re not going to be doing this job forever. But while you’re here, you owe it to yourself to give it your best. Why? Because when you commit to doing something, self-respect dictates that you do your absolute best- whether you’re handling customer complaints all day long, ghostwriting social media blurbs for your manager, or writing a speech for the president. Respect yourself, and bring a high level of dedication to your work. Then, at the end of the day, you can feel proud of your efforts, instead of bitter and resentful. Side bonus? By approaching your work with dignity and self-respect, you’ll make a powerful impression on others. As Confucius says: Respect yourself and others will respect you. And when others respect you, deeply? New job opportunities are far more likely to land in your lap. Empowerment. Appreciation. Self-respect. Three words to remember as you work toward securing a better position. As I often tell my clients: To upgrade your quality of life, start by upgrading your thoughts. You can do this. A better job is waiting. Create an attitude that will bring you closer to it- not farther away. Photo of man in office courtesy of Shutterstock.

Important Job Skills for Concierges

Important Job Skills for Concierges Important Job Skills for Concierges A concierge provides a variety of services to guests. Typically, concierges work in hotels, but they may also work in clubs, restaurants, and other venues. A concierge provides guests with information about locations and services outside of the hotel. They may book services for guests, such as transportation and activities. Below is a list of the top five most important skills for a concierge, as well as attached lists of related skills employers seek in candidates for concierge jobs. How to Use Skills Lists You can use these skills lists throughout all stages of your job search process. Your resume is the first place where you should utilize these skill words, both in the descriptions of your work history and in your opening summary of qualifications. Secondly, you can use these in your  cover letter. In the body of your letter, you should mention one or two of these skills, and provide specific examples of times when you demonstrated them at work. Finally, you can use these skill words in your  interview. Make sure you have at least one example for a time you demonstrated each of the top 5 skills listed here. Of course, each job will require different skills and experiences, so make sure you read the job description carefully and focus on the skills listed by the employer. Also, review our lists of  skills listed by job  and  type of skill.   Top Concierge Skills 1. Communication - Communication  is critical for a concierge. They speak with guests all day, so it is important that they speak clearly and maintain a positive tone and a helpful attitude. Job candidates who are fluent in more than one language will have an advantage when applying for jobs, particularly in major metropolitan areas like New York, Seattle, Los Angeles, Washington DC, and Dallas. Perhaps most importantly, being a good communicator means being a good  listener. Concierges need to listen carefully to their guests’ requests to provide a positive experience for them and to proactively identify any particular support they may require. General Orders of a Sentry, USMC Version

General Orders of a Sentry, USMC Version General Orders of a Sentry, USMC Version One of the first things you will learn in the United States Military is how to stand duty.  You will also be required to recite verbatim the General Orders of a Sentry. It is a vital but most basic function of the military. The General Orders of a Sentry is a list of rules a military member must know verbatim and practice while standing duty (or watch).  All guard posts have rules to follow, and the Eleven General Orders are detailed but universal to all military members.  You will have to learn these General Orders when you arrive at Basic Training, so get a head start before you arrive for Day 1 of Boot Camp. The Eleven General Orders of a Sentry as required in Marine Corps Boot Camp (and after, when performing sentry duty) are listed below with a short description: It is slightly different than the Navy Version  (mostly because ranks and titles differ between the Navy and USMC), and even more different than the Army Version. Take charge of this post and all government property in view. When on duty as a guard or sentry, you are in charge of your area and have the authority to stop and question any rank who seeks to pass your area.Walk my post in a military manner, keeping always on the alert and observing everything that takes place within sight or hearing.Stay observant with keen attention to details.  It is easy to get complacent after many hours on duty - especially if you have not had many people to deal with.  But your ability to pay attention to your surroundings will save your life and others. Report all violations of orders I am instructed to enforce. You will have a written log to keep track of all events that occurred while on watch.  Record everything, but report anyone not following the rules.  To repeat all calls [from posts]more distant from the guardhouse than my own.Pass the word to your fellow members of the guard either by radio, land line, signal, or vocal.  Quit my post only when properly relieved.Do not leave your post, until someone has arrived to take your place.  To receive, obey, and pass on to the sentry who relieves me, all orders from the Commanding Officer, Officer of the Day, Officers, and Non-Commissioned Officers of the guard only.Make sure you pass down all details of the watch and any special orders given during your duty day to the person who relieves you.   Talk to no one except in the line of duty.  It is all business when on duty.No cellphones, texting, or other business but protecting and guarding your area is what you do.  Give the alarm in case of fire or disorder.Anytime a major disruption or danger occurs, sound the alarm and call for back up.  To call the Corporal of the Guard in any case not covered by instructions. When not sure of a situation, ask your superiors to confirm.  Salute all officers and all colors and standards not cased.Standard military courtesy applies as senior members and color guard pass.   Be especially watchful at night and during the time for challenging, to challenge all persons on or near my post, and to allow no one to pass without proper authority.Stay vigilant! Make sure everyone who enters the area you protect are authorized.   If you are standing watch (duty) for the first time,  as long as you know these eleven basic orders, you will be able to perform the task without issue.  The last thing you want is an  Article 113 of the UCMJ.   Take the General Orders seriously. There will be times you will be challenged by higher-ranking members in the military, but the General Orders of the Sentry give you the authority over any member not following the rules and regulations of that post. The one thing you want to avoid is complacency as there is a saying, Complacency Kills.  Stay alert, vigilant, and do your duty to keep the post you are guarding secure.   The terms standing watch, guard duty, standing duty, guarding my post are all synonymous with sentry duty.

How to Plan a Company Meeting

How to Plan a Company Meeting How to Plan a Company Meeting Congratulations! Your company will be holding a meeting for a group of employees selected from all levels of the company. The CEO has given you the responsibility of Project Manager for the event. These tips and sample project plan demonstrate one way a Project Manager could approach building the project plan for a  company meeting or similarly complex project. Pre-Plan the Project Your first step is to plan the plan. You start by discussing the event with the stakeholders. If this was done last year, what went right? What went wrong? Who managed the project and can they help you avoid pitfalls this year? Since the CEO assigned the project to you, what does he/she want out of the event? When will the event be? Where? What is the budget? Assemble as much information as you can. This will be the skeleton on which you build the project plan. Build the Team What other resources do you need to make this project a success? Are there people in other departments who can help you make this event a success? What do you need to do to get there help? Can you just ask or do you need to get formal approval from their boss? How much time do you need from them? What specific skills do you need them to provide? Can anyone else provide that skill if the person you want is not available? Since this is a company-wide meeting, how can HR help? Do you need assistance from the Facilities Department? What about the Marketing Department? Do you need help in that area? Plan the Agenda Once you know how long the meeting will last, you start to fill in the time blocks. Do you need an opening speaker? Who will it be? Are you going to keep the attendees together or will you break them into smaller groups for a part of the program? How many other speakers will you need? Who will facility the smaller sessions if you break out? Will the event take more than one day? How will you close Day One? How will you re-open on Day Two? How will you wrap up at the end? Do you need a closing speech? How will you handle the logistics of people checking out of the hotel if you book one? Find the Space Find out how many people are coming. Then determine how large of  a space you need. Where will the event be held? Is there room at the corporate office or do you need a larger space? Does the CEO want the meeting held off-site so people can concentrate, or does he/she want it held in the office to minimize cost? Which properties in your area can provide the space you need? Is a hotel near the airport a good choice to minimize travel time for people arriving from out of town or should you find something out of town that will be quieter? What do the different venues charge for their facilities? What do they include and what will you need to purchase and have brought in? Will they assign an individual for you to work with? What is their policy regarding material and people from outside? Pull It Off Having gathered the answers to at least most of these questions, you can begin to put together the project plan. Remember that what we are showing here is the list of project tasks, the work breakdown structure (WBS) only. It does not include any of the dependencies between tasks or the timelines. Those would be added later. Sample Company Meeting Project Plan In  How to Plan a Project Using the Basic Tools of Project Management, we discussed the thinking behind  project planning and using project management skills during the planning process. Here is how a project plan work breakdown structure (WBS) might look for a project to plan a company meeting: 1. Pre-Plan The Project Determine the budgetDiscuss with CEO to establish project goalsContact previous Project Manager (PM) for tipsDetermine the stakeholder listContact stakeholders for input.Establish preferred date for the eventDetermine how many speakers/presenters are neededDetermine how many support staff  are  neededDetermine how many employees will attendList possible locations for the event 2. Build The Project Team Get rep from Marketing Get rep from HRSee if Purchasing will assign someone to helpAsk Susan to handle all the speakers detailsGet rep from Facilities Schedule project team kick-off meeting 3. Develop The Agenda 3a Plan Day One Set start timeSet time, arrange place and staffing for registrationSet length of morning sessionSet length of speechesCalculate number of speakers needed for morning sessionRecruit speakersPlan mid-morning break (time and length)Arrange refresh of conference room during break (water, trash, etc.)Plan lunch break (time, length, location, menu, who pays)Plan afternoon session (length, number of speakers)Recruit afternoon speakersPlan Day One closing (time, who, length) 3b Plan Day Two Set start timeSet length of morning sessionCalculate number of speakers needed for morning sessionRecruit speakersPlan mid-morning break (time and length)Arrange refresh of conference room during break (water, trash, etc.)Plan lunch break (time, length, location, menu, who pays)Plan afternoon session (length, number of speakers)Recruit afternoon speakersPlan Closing Speech (time, who, length)Arrange check-out timing with hotel 4. Plan   the Space Determine the  number  of attendeesPlan seating arrangement (rows vs. tables)Calculate space neededInvestigate places available with that amount of space (costs, location, services included)Count number of speakers each day and totalDetermine number and type of support staff neededFind out how many attendees/speakers/staff will need roomsNegotiate costs and dates with available locationsSign contract with selected location 5. Publicize The Event Finalize all details with the event locationMake sure attendees are notifiedNotify all speakers of topic and presentation time/dayNotify all support staff of duties and shiftsGet RSVPs from attendeesNotify replacement attendees as needed 6.  Follow Up Get draft speeches from all speakersReview final speechesGet  name tags  for all attendees, speakers, staffPurchase any materials and gifts for attendeesReconfirm with event location 7. Review and Rate Send satisfaction survey to all attendeesSend review survey to all speakersSend thank you to all speakers and staffHold close-out meeting with project team Further Planning The project plan work breakdown structure (WBS) above shows a sample for planning a company meeting. It is just an outline. The project team still would need to work on these items and expand on many of them. In addition, they would need to work on the time needed for each task, the relative importance of the tasks and the inter-relationships/dependencies between tasks.

Are you a rock star at work or a backup singer

Are you a rock star at work or a backup singer Are you a rock star at work or a backup singer In the workplace, we often call someone who is a huge success a rock star. But that also means they wouldn’t have reached their true success without their backup team. While there’s merit in each position depending on your skillset, it’s just a matter of finding the one that works best for you.I decided to ask someone who is both of these things simultaneously to help us understand the differences. Chef Austin* is cofounder of Bennett’s Butter Co. His day job is at a large tech company that feeds their employees breakfast, lunch and dinner from scratch every day across the world.Backup singer at work, rock star side hustle“I help design and build out their kitchen and cafe spaces, Austin said. “I get to look at the latest equipment and trends in food and work with local chefs to design the most state-of-the-art kitchens.”Follow Ladders on Flipboard!Follow Ladders’ magazines on Flipboard covering Happiness, Productivity, Job Satisfaction, Neuroscience, and more! And tha t’s what inspired his side hustle. “I decided to get started on developing compound butters when I was in culinary school a few years ago. I’d come home and cook for my family with the butters I was creating, and I’d leave the leftovers with my family to test out. They would tell me how much cooking with the butters instantly improved and elevated the flavor of their meal while cutting prep time.”Austin’s first production run was in November 2018, “but as far as recipes and packaging, it’s always a work in process as we work with new vendors and flavors. I am always looking for the next best thing.” And he’s always doing it while still working at a more traditional job as well.Rock star takeaway: Pay attention to what people are telling you to improve your product. Even if you’re the product! The benefits of eachAustin said he loves his day job where, for all intents and purposes, he’s a corporate backup singer because of “its incredible culture, opportuniti es, ability to constantly learn, network, and grow. Although I am in a supporting role, I still take pride and ownership of my day to day responsibilities and feel like I can be incredibly effective and successful.”And while he wears many hats in his corporate life, Austin said: “It’s nowhere as many as compared to the different roles I need to play at Bennett’s Butter.”Backup singer takeaway: Even when part-time, it’s fine to take pride of ownership in your group accomplishments.Managing your professional personalitiesAs a food entrepreneur, Austin recognizes just how much of a team effort it is producing, marketing and bringing a new product to market. “While it is very much a team effort, it’s a much leaner team and operation spearheaded by myself and my co-founder and sister Bess, and we both bring different strengths and talents to the table.During the day I’m operating from a position of power because of the size of and resources at my company, while my side hustle is very much a startup within an industry that’s incredibly challenging to break into.”Rock star takeaway: Garage band or arena headliners, you still need your backup crew to make you shine.Being a rock star isn’t all it’s cracked up to beFor anyone who’s dreamed of being in the spotlight, Austin thinks you need to know that “It’s unbelievably humbling. I am constantly putting myself out there, working until the wee hours of the morning and not always seeing instant gratification.Sometimes things don’t go as planned, and it’s all about problem-solving, being nimble and getting partners and vendors to adjust to the needs of a growing business and not getting discouraged. You have to work through it and persevere.”Rock star takeaway: Being the person who represents a brand also means the added hassles and headaches involved in perfecting your product. It’s all about teamworkWhether you’re producing hit singles or gourmet butter, you can’t do any of it o n my own. Austin said “My sister Bess is an integral of the success of Bennett’s Butter. We work as a team, and both have our strong suits, recognize what they are, and divide and conquer accordingly. For example, as a trained chef, I own recipe development and food production. Bess has a sales and marketing background which has been instrumental in handling those aspects of the business.”And more than that, even if there’s a single face to any brand, Austin reminds us that “there’s a lot more to Bennett’s than Bess and me. We’re fortunate to have an amazing network of people we’ve met through both our professional personal lives who have been integral in growing and scaling our business. This ranges from our packaging and paper guru and finance experts to our sales broker, graphics and web designers, photographers, and PR rock star.”Rock star takeaway: Remember the backup singers. They’re the ones who support your time in the spotlight!*Since he’s still empl oyed at a global tech corporation, for the purposes of this article we’ll only use his first name. You might also enjoy… New neuroscience reveals 4 rituals that will make you happy Strangers know your social class in the first seven words you say, study finds 10 lessons from Benjamin Franklin’s daily schedule that will double your productivity The worst mistakes you can make in an interview, according to 12 CEOs 10 habits of mentally strong people
